Bulletproof Coffee
This whole bulletproof trend has been around for a while but I was slow to get on board since I don't really drink coffee... And yes, I realize I'm quite alone in this... I'm not opposed to it by any means, but I'm SUPER sensitive to the caffeine in coffee. Frankly, I prefer a chilled out vibe and coffee gets me a little too cracked out. I'll find myself running home from work desperate to pour myself a glass of red wine just to come back down to Earth. BUT! What I AM super into is healthy fats (I worship avocado like a true basic). When I first started incorporating good fats into my diet, weight literally fell off me and it sure wasn't because I was logging hours at the gym. Anyway, the idea behind this little brew is "fat for fuel" so I decided to check it out...
WHAT IS IT?
Bullet proof coffee is a part of the Bulletproof diet... an anti-inflammatory diet that highlights foods with high nutritional value. The diet encourages you to start your day with bulletproof coffee... a "high performance drink" that kickstarts both your brain + your energy. Sounds fancy, right? Like Bradley-Cooper-in-Limitless fancy...
WHAT DOES IT DO?
- Energizes the mind + body
- Suppresses hunger (ooo la la!)
- Promotes mental clarity + sharper brain function #GetSmart
THE INGREDS: COFFEE + OIL + BUTTER
Arbonne (my longtime love) has a 30 day detoxifying cleanse program that focuses on literally detoxifying your body. During the 30 days, you have to eliminate all toxins (duh). Most of them are obvious ...like alcohol + anything processed + simple carbs... but surprisingly, coffee is also on the list. Apparently, COFFEE beans can easily develop mold toxins... umm, ew? The peeps at Bulletproof have taken special care to make sure their process decreases this as much as possible. Find it here.
"Ingesting mold toxins can contribute to chronic health issues. Bulletproof® Upgraded Coffee Beans are meticulously grown at high altitude on single estates in Guatemala, hand-harvested, carefully processed, handled and roasted to maintain maximum integrity and flavor. The final roast then undergoes proprietary lab testing to verify that our coffee meets the Bulletproof quality and purity standards." -www.bulletproofcoffee.com
MCT or Brain Octane oil is the key ingredient in bulletproof coffee. We are not talking about your average organic-unrefined-expeller-pressed jar of coconut oil that every girl has in both her kitchen and bathroom. Ohhh no... Yes, there is brain octane oil in that jar, but in very small quantities. Bulletproof's little magic elixir here is concentrated brain octane oil in the purest form available. This guy is important because he increases ketones in your bod. Translation? Burn fat + Feed brain.
"As soon as you consume Brain Octane, it is rapidly absorbed and changed into ketone bodies – providing instant energy to the brain without breaking down glucose from sugars or carbohydrates. Brain Octane produces 4x the ketone energy of plain coconut oil, and also supports healthy digestion and immune function." -www.bulletproofcoffee.com
Not only does the 1tbsp of organic grass-fed butter give the drink a creamy consistency, it slows down the absorption of caffeine in your bod so that your energy kick lasts longer. This is that whole fat-for-fuel thing. Just PLEASE make sure it's grass-fed, organic butter, from happy cows!
HOW?
Just brew the coffee as directed and then blend it with the oil + butter. Easy peasy, you got this.
THE VERDICT
Well it tastes AMAZING. Creamy coffee without any cream! I also add cinnamon to mine because I'm obsessed. Cinnamon tastes great and it's got anti-inflammatory + antibacterial properties. It definitely suppresses my appetite (although I kinda feel like all coffee does??) and it does keep me super focused. On the days I drink it, I'm like a little laser beam at work. Buttt it won't be an every day thing for me. First of all, my morning is already jam-packed with liquids, and secondly, I kind of already eat a lottt of fats. The good kind! But still, you don't want to overdo it. Lastly, mellow is so much more my speed. Bulletproof coffee gives you less jitters than regs coffee but they're still there!
